Meeting with the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation
On February 28, 2020, a meeting of the delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan led by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulaziz Kamilov with the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad was held in Doha, Qatar.
The parties discussed the current situation in Afghanistan, the parties’ efforts to launch the peace political process in this country as soon as possible.
Zalmay Khalilzad noted that Uzbekistan, under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, is implementing a completely new policy towards Afghanistan, based on the principles of friendship, good neighborliness and mutual understanding. This is recognized by both the Afghan people and other countries of the world, including the United States.
It was emphasized that U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo’s recent visit to Uzbekistan gave bilateral Uzbekistan – American relations a new powerful impetus for their further development and determined the main prospects and areas of bilateral cooperation in the Afghan direction.
The American side also considers it important to continue cooperation with Uzbekistan on implementation of various projects in Afghanistan that are aimed at restoring the country’s national economy. In this regard, Zalmay Khalilzad praised the efforts of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in this direction, especially emphasizing their integrity, practicality and focus on long-term results.
